what Cannabidiol (CBD) is. We discussed how it affects the endocannabinoid system in your body for overall wellness, and how CBD can even help you address severe health conditions.n our first few articles in this series, we explained the nature of the hemp plant, and
Here, we want to help you understand the many ways CBD oil affects your mood, mind and body. We’ll dig into any possible side-effects and help you understand the exact healing properties and benefits scientists and everyday users alike attribute to the use of CBD oil.
Finally, we’ll give you some insight for how to figure out the right dosage for you or your pet as you get started exploring CBD oil benefits for yourself.
CBD Oil Benefits
Daily use of a high-quality hemp CBD tincture is the easiest way to get started experiencing the following CBD oil benefits. For steady, overall effects throughout your day, we recommend use of a CBD oil tincture that you take 1 to 3 times a day. For immediate effect of any of the following CBD oil benefits, we recommend using a topical or a CBD vape oil – as you’ll feel the effects in minutes instead of hours.
As we’ve already discussed, CBD and THC have very different effects. CBD is a non-psychoactive chemical compound; it does not bind with the CB1 receptor that’s responsible for THC’s induced high. While you will not experience a high with CBD, you may be wondering, how does CBD make you feel?
Here’s our hit list of favotire CBD oil benefits and how they make you feel:
Calm, but sober
First of all, you’ll feel perfectly sober. You may feel much more relaxed, however! *yay bonus* Many users report that using CBD reduces their anxiety and helps them feel calmer and more focused. This is because CBD reduces your autonomic arousal. In other words, your body’s fight or flight response – which is far too hair-trigger in many of us these days – will be somewhat curbed, allowing you to chill out.
You may also find that CBD improves your mood. In fact, plenty of CBD products focus on assisting specific moods like Bliss, Calm, Focus, Rejuvenation, and Joy. Some animal studies have shown that depressed rats experienced a marked benefit from an injection of CBD.
If you suffer from chronic pain… or those late work nights have kinked your neck… or your latest workout has left you sore… CBD can offer some much needed relief at the proper dose. If you’re suffering from pain caused by inflammation, CBD’s powerful anti-inflammatory effects will provide relief.
Remember to use a fast-acting topical or CBD vape oil for immediate effects!
If you suffer from nausea, CBD could help reduce or eliminate that tummy trouble. Cannabinoids have been used successfully for years to treat nausea resulting from cancer and AIDS treatments.
CBD Oil Side-Effects
Multiple studies have confirmed CBD is safe at a wide range of doses. Clinical trials conducted with patients suffering from epilepsy found no serious side effects when using CBD. The majority of research suggests that most all of CBD oil effects are fantastic! However some individuals do experience certain side-effects and we recommend you be aware of these as you begin to explore the benefits of CBD.
One thing to keep in mind is that all known side-effects have been categorized as “mild.” Plus, only a small percentage of users experience these side-effects. While CBD oil is generally well tolerated, both research and empirical data from users report the following possible side-effects:
- mild digestive upset and diarrhea
- changes in appetite (generally making it stronger)
- dry mouth
- mild low blood pressure
- some psychomotor slowing
It is important to know that CBD can interact with other medications. Definitely chat with your doctor to go over any other supplements or medications you may be taking.
Ultimately, the answer to “how does CBD make you feel?” will depend on your unique sensitivity and body chemistry, the type of product you take, and your dosage. If you are particularly sensitive to supplements, medicine or food, it’s always a good idea to take things slow. Begin with a small dose, steadily increasing every few days to few weeks. When you start to notice your desired benefits without any unwanted side-effects, then you’ve found your sweet spot!
CBD Oil Healing Properties
The benefits of CBD oil (and the cannabis plant in general!) are literally legion. Thanks to the passage of the 2018 US Farm Bill in December, and the increased research that will follow, what we know about CBD oil benefits and its healing properties will only increase in the months and years ahead.
Luckily, there’s also plenty we already know!
“CBD is really exceptional. There has been no other drug in the history of neuropsychiatry that has the potential to treat so many different disorders.”
Esther Blessing, assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU’s Langone Health in New York, researches CBD’s effect on anxiety. She says, “CBD is really exceptional. There has been no other drug in the history of neuropsychiatry that has the potential to treat so many different disorders.”

The primary reason for such profound and wide-ranging CBD oil benefits is the fact that our bodies are filled with cannabinoid receptors. We are literally designed to use cannabinoids to balance our various systems!
When using a good CBD product, you can benefit from the prevalence of these cannabinoid receptors in your body, as well as CBD’s ability to work with receptors outside the endocannabinoid system as well. We call this a “multi-target” therapy. And it’s why CBD does so many friggin’ cool things…
Here’s a look at the many already well-known CBD oil benefits:
CBD and other phytocannabinoids have powerful pain relieving effects. Research is still exploring the exact mechanisms that allow CBD to alleviate pain. But it seems that it’s anti-inflammatory properties are definitely part of the puzzle.
CBD is a gangbuster at reducing inflammation. Moreso than even aspirin, which helps explain its effectiveness in treating pain and inflammatory diseases like multiple sclerosis.
Though the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are well demonstrated, not all the mechanisms are fully understood yet. It’s thought that CBD’s unique ability to bind with receptors outside the endocannabinoid system plays a role and that CBD blocks pro-inflammatory compounds in the body such as the COX-2 enzyme. Also, the “entourage effect” of CBD in a full-spectrum form with other cannabinoids enhances its anti-inflammatory effect.
Super Star Antioxidant
An antioxidant is a substance that helps remove harmful oxidizing agents (otherwise known as free-radicals) from your body. CBD is a powerful antioxidant, even more so than vitamins C and E, and can therefore play an important role in protecting your body from things like heart disease and cancer.
Studies also show that CBD has broad neuroprotective benefits. This means that CBD can protect neurons from damage, as well as assist in their repair.
This makes CBD a great option for those suffering from neurological diseases, or neurological damage from diabetes or other conditions. CBD is currently being explored as a treatment for neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and epilepsy, including rare and hard to treat forms like Dravet syndrome. The US Department of Health and Human Services even holds a patent that describes the neuroprotective and antioxidant benefits of CBD.
Mood Boosting Bonus
One of our favorite CBD oil benefits, here at Heal thy Body, is CBD’s ability to boost mood and reduce anxiety, thanks to its affinity with serotonin receptors. It also helps regulate GABA, a neurotransmitter involved in regulating anxiety, and glutamate, another neurotransmitter that happens to be the most prevalent in our nervous systems.
Research also suggests that cannabinoids help regulate neurogenesis (the creation of new cells) in the brain’s hippocampus, which is responsible for regulating emotions.
“Preclinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.”
A study published in the journal of the American Society for Experimental Neurotherapeutics, Neurotheurapeutics, asserted that “preclinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.” Use of CBD holds significant promise for improvement in those with anxiety disorders and those who need to reduce anxiety from episodic stress.
In fact, during a 2018 study, CBD users with mental health issues were surveyed and 53% of them reported improved attitude, while 30.7% reported an improvement in both anxiety symptoms and relaxation.
If you can get your hands on a full-spectrum hemp CBD product, then you’ll also get a lot more than just CBD oil benefits! Cannabinoids in general have been shown to be – not only anti-inflammatory, but – pretty much anti- tons of other bad stuff that can happen to a body. 🙂
As an antispasmodic, CBD is FDA-approved to treat epilepsy patients.
Another cannabinoid present in full-spectrum hemp oil is cannabichromene (CBC) which has powerful antibacterial properties along with moderate antifungal action.
CBD oil benefits have also been studied for CBD’s effect on viruses, and Cannabidiol has been shown to have antiviral properties that improve some types of infectious diseases.
Again, cannabinoids are there to help regulate just about every major system within the body and are crucial to the functioning of our immune systems.
Answer to Opioids?
As you may be aware, the United States is in the grip of an opioid crisis right now. People who depend on opioids to treat chronic pain are at risk for a variety of complications, including: physical dependency, liver damage, sleep problems, respiratory problems and death by overdose. Users also develop a tolerance to opioids, meaning they must take more and more over time to achieve the same level of pain relief.
One of the biggest CBD oil benefits that can truly help – not just you, but the entire United States! is its ability to replace dangerous opioids by providing a safe yet effective alternative. CBD is well tolerated and not addictive. When it comes to pain management, these qualities make it a safer alternative to both opioids and traditional NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) , which have been linked to harmful side-effects like stomach ulcers and liver damage, just to name a few.
Many pet owners have questions about the CBD oil benefits for their dog or cat. Will it help with a pet’s anxiety? Can it help my cat survive the drive to the vet, or stimulate my dog’s apetite after a surgery?
Dogs, in particular, have an even more complex endocannabinoid system than we do. With the loosening of federal restrictions on CBD, more and more veterinarians are open to discussing the use of CBD to help pets… and new research is ramping up to investigate the effect of CBD on dogs with conditions such as epilepsy and cancer.
Horse-lovers are also finding CBD oil benefits their equine friends, assisting with pain relief, mood enhancement, and even some severe conditions. Because each animal’s system is different, along with their metabolism and size, it’s important to seek expert guidance before giving CBD to your horse, goat or other animal. We know enough about dosage recommendations for dogs, but it’s important to speak to your vet for any other animal that might benefit from CBD.
CBD Dosage Recommendations
Each person and animal has a different physiology. Every body is different. Just as with other medications and supplements, it can take time to find the correct CBD dosage. The FDA does not provide a recommended daily allowance for CBD and probably never will. Due to variances in weight, metabolism, lifestyle, eating habits and the like, you will need a different amount of CBD than your mom or your dog. The good news is that researchers have found that full-spectrum CBD is effective and well tolerated at a wide range of doses.
To get you started in exploring the right dosage for you to receive maximum CBD oil benefits, here are some overall guidelines. Keep in mind, this should not be considered medical advice.
- Make sure you have a quality product with a verified concentration of CBD.
(See our CBD Buyer’s Guide for all 13 things to look for in your CBD)
- Begin by taking the recommended minimum dose from the packaging on your CBD oil or product (remembering that different products contain different concentrations of CBD).
- You also want to consider taking CBD twice a day so you can spread the effects to last the entire day.
- Take this initial dosage for 3-4 weeks and then increase by around 25mg at a time until you are able to relieve your symptoms. Again, allow 3-4 weeks at the new dose before increasing.
The right dosage of CBD will also depend on what health issue you’re dealing with. For example, chronic pain patients may see results with a dosage between 2.5 and 20 mg per day while a person with epilepsy may need up to 300mg per day.
Dosing for pets
When it comes to dosing for pets, start with the smallest possible dose. Definitely avoid edibles intended for humans, since many of those ingredients, such as chocolate and xylitol, are toxic to pets. One Portland-based veterinarian who recommends the use of hemp oil for pets recommends a starting dose of 0.05 mg/kg/day and gradually increase, if needed, to a maximum dose of 1 mg/kg/day. Wait about five days between dose increases.
In our next installment of this series, Article 5, we’ll take an even closer look at the long list of specific conditions CBD can assist.
